We had a Korean and Chinese engineer over for work. the Chinese one didn't know how to swim. The Korean was up in three tries. Wen't around the lake yelling " I am flying I am flying ". The Chinese up on secound try. Booms are the best.

5 1/2 years old, first time on skis, up on the first try! Best way to teach someone how to ski is on the boom.....

Sent my son to a one day waterski camp when he was 5 and he too was up 1st try. The boom definetly rules for learning. The one problem I had though was our boat didn't have a boom and it took half the summer to convince him to try the long line. Ironically he had kneeboarded many times on the long line before he learned to ski and it was no problem. He's eight now and he doesn't need any convincing...I can't keep him out of the water. Nothing like watching your kids ski or wakeboard. Makes it all worthwhile.

The problem is going from the boom to longline on combos- quite a difference and quite a confidence crusher for a few first-timers I've had. There is almost no similarity between the boom and longline, so that instant gratification goes right out the window when they try longline.

I normally do the boom for a bit, then a 5' rope off the boom and then longline. Normally have had great success this way.

Actually he did the 5' at the ski school and got up first time but for some reason got scared when we went to do it at our lake. Go figure. Funny thing was when he finally did try the long line my brother went in the water with him (deep start) and he got up first try. Hard to figure out what goes on in their young minds. You guys remember how you learned? First time I tried was a seated dock start and swallowed half the lake I was six. Don't think I tried again for about another year. But once I got up the first time I was hooked. Don't know who gets more excited now me or the kids. LOL

Yep. Always go to the 5' exetension before the long rope.

I too have the Beaman Boom purchased from SWS. Easy to deploy and bring back in due to it's light weight.

Not sure of the brand? It is whatever Scarpa sells made for the RLXi.

The problem I've found with the 5' line and anything but barefooting is that you run a risk of the skier actually being able to hit the boat. Their legs get crossed up or something and they end up a little too close for comfort. I had my brother on a trick ski, learning deep starts on the 5' handle and he all but hit the boat on one fall. That's all I needed to see. Again, not a problem footing since there is nothing to "steer" into the boat, but I wouldn't recommend the 5' rope for anything but footing based on my experience- it only takes one time.

I see your point but if the length of rope is way out towards the end of the boom...I would think that it would be pretty tough to hit the boat.
