Bimini strap eye mount point

I'm trying to come up with the best place to put the front bimini strap eye and I figured I'd see what eveyone else thinks.

I figure I've got 3-4 options.

  1. Screw the strap eye right into the top deck.
  2. Screw the strap eye into the top of the window frame.
  3. Screw the strap eye into bottom of the window frame. I'm guessing, though, that the window glass comes down to the point I'd be screwing into, so that's probably out of the question.
  4. Just use the pull out cleat. It's easy, clean and sturdy.

What do you guys think?

I'll try to post a couple of pictures after my membership renewal goes through.

Thanks,

Mike

drilling into the windshield frame makes me nervous. I've drilled into the deck on my previous two boats for the mounts w/o issue....I'd go that route again.

Why not skip the strap eye altogether and just use the hand rails in the bow. You may need to have your local canvas shop make up a couple 1' strips of nylon strap, but it eliminates drilling holes in the deck or windshield frame. I plan to use this method when my bimini arrives. There were some pictures of this system floating around somewhere...

I always mount my bimini on the deck just outside the windshield so that it will fold forward of the windshield (out of the way) when it is down. I then use a loop of cord through the hand rail, up front, and through eyelets attached to the rear of the windshield frame using existing screws in the frame.

I hate to drill holes in my boat.

i did the same as ibelieve, but had my local shop make up 4 straps with Drings. the front 2 go to the rails has pictured. the back passenger side goes to the grab rail. the fourth I had made longer, so it wraps around the bolster on the drivers side (since my RLX has no driver side grab rail).

jgouveia3 was very helpful in helping me decide where to mount. Perhaps you could ask him to send you a few pics of his set up. It certainly sold me.

Thanks again J!

Ok, now that I can upload pictures again....

Here's the two options I was referring to. I was thinking about going up to the grab rails, but it's such a long way that I didn't like the look of it a whole lot.

So, I think I'm going to stick with using the cleats, but if the window glass doesn't come down into the frame as low as shown in this picture I'm still considering that route as well.

I'd go with the mounts off the back of the windshield rail or grab rail with straps and use two D ring straps on the deck rail up front, even if it's just to get the front stabilized from a more foward position.

With the front straps going down at such a hard angle to your cleats, that may put a lot of stress on the the rail where the pivot/base mounts are and wouldn't likely give enough stability at moderate to high speeds.

My .02 good luck
