ski locker plug

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever replace the entire plug in the ski locker of a '99 sunsetter lx.

Ours ripped out completely while on the lake today.

No hull damage so I do not think we hit anything.

I am not sure how but it is gone, luckily we caught it before to much water came it.

Thanks in advance?

To answer the question how did it rip out, I really do not know. I purchased this boat used and even though I did an tough inspection it is tough to catch everything. My guess is that the prior owner had a problem with this, and reinstalled the plug incorrectly and with silicone.

I fixed the problem, and here is how:

The plug and collor is a $6 set, the real problem was trying to get my dealer to tell me what to use to install the plug with. I heard they use a product they get from Malibu and they cannot sell it to commoners. With that I went to West Marine, and they sold me a 3M product called 5200 it comes in white or black, and it is a selant, adhesive meant for underwater applications.

I filled in the old holes from the plug collar, rotated the collar 30 degrees, redrilled the new install holes, gooped the heck out of the back of the new collar reattached with the three screws required and cleaned up the excess 5200.

3M suggests that you let the product set for 24 hours

That is it!

I used 5200 when I installed my wedge. That's some nasty stuff... you'll be lucky if it's off your fingers by the end of summer. After 5 years, the bit of 5200 that oozed out to form a bead around my wedge plate still appears identical to the day I did the install. It's amazing!
