Battery "Cranking" Strength??

Recommended Posts

Hi group. I may have found an issue with my failure to start. I have an older deep cycle battery (2004 MCA = 500) and a brand new deep cycle MCA = 500.

My dealer only recommends MCA = 1000 -- is this the norm?

On battery A or B -- second starts are hit or miss... but if I turn to "all" the boat fires up -- I'm thinking the parrallel addition say MCA 500-800 is all that is required.

Tonight I picked up a "starting" marine battery at MCA = 1000 (charging as I type) -- I'd be courious to find out what the rest of the team have in their battery boxes... thanks.

Olive.

Your gonna get so many replies your head's gonna spin. I use two Costco 750 CCA in parallel. I can't justify the price of the Optima's a lot of folks use. Good luck on this one...

LS -- did you purchase "starting" , Hybrid or "deep cycle" batteries? (btw, how did you connect your stereo -- to a, b or both -- I've got anothe question out there, so perhaps I'll hold my tongue until we hear back on the original question -- regards. O

My rule of thumb is 1 and a half times your cubic inches=cca. Use a starting battery not a deep cycle, they are for electric trolling motors. Also use a marine battery.

Malibu and Indmar tell us that the engine needs at least 650 cca from the battery.

Thanks Jeff -- always nice to hear from you -- too bad our local dealers wouldn't visit now and again! We resolved the issue by putting in a 1,000 MCA starting battery and a 500 deep cycle for the stereo -- touch would no problems following the change.

Thanks to all!

I just bought a new battery for my Sporty. With other boats, I always bought auto batteries, but because my manual said to only buy a marine battery, I bought a marine starting battery with 1000 CCA. My manual said it should have at least 650 CCA. I couldn't find a deep cycle that had 650CCA, unless it was huge, and too big to fit my battery box, so I went with a starting battery.
