I don’t think that is unique to the boating industry. Same applies when ordering a car. 

I had this same code, and a tune up fixed my issue.  However, when researching this issue, @oldjeep is correct in that Indmar has a "performance update" that the dealer can re-flash on the ECM.  Every thread I read on this issue where a tune up did not solve the issue, the reflash fixed it.

There are fewer more accurate statements than this in my experience.

We'll see if they stepped up when I pick my boat up this weekend.  It's in for things that were never delivered as well as warranty issues that never got addressed because they couldn't schedule me in without losing valuable water time.

Or have the old one rebuilt at  an alternator shop, just tell them several times that it is for a boat.
