Looking for customization options for transom remote space

I would like to replace this remote with some sort of sunk in storage that would fit a cell phone or other small items like keys. Does anyone have any ideas what I could use? I am not very good at fabricating and my google search results came up empty. Thanks!

That's not a transom remote, but if it was you could turn it into a storage compartment for stuff you don't need anymore.

So it is not. Don't I feel like an idiot. What is the walkway space where that remote is located called in boat terms? Not to hijack my own topic. As per the your reply, I am definitely going to turn the cutout into some sort of storage. I am looking for ideas for plastic inserts of something of that nature that I could use.

Last year I rewired my stock stereo that had the same unit. I went with a wet sounds 420 as my H/U and abandoned the stock black box/remote. I too wanted to remove/replace that remote with something but found that it is only 1/2" deep +/-. It is surface mounted on the vinyl with only a small hole with a wire to pass through behind it. If you turned it into a pocket of some sort you'd be doing a lot of cutting and vinyl work.

That is good to know. I guess I should have taken a closer look. Should be fairly easy to find something to patch a small wiring hole. Did you end up removing yours?

No, I left it in place for the time being. Not sure how I want to cover the hole up. A nice decorative aluminum piece of some sort would cover it nicely - just have to wait to find the right thing.

I'm considering one of these 2 options. It is obviously going to depend on what the vinyl looks like when it is removed.

I swapped out my old fugly emblems (black and gold, ugh!) for those...very nice, you won't be disappointed.
