Hes a little shorter than me and slightly larger and I ride a 144(im 5'10 160). I dont think you can go wrong with 144 to 150. Also, get a decent pair of closed toe bindings from the get go. I think it actually helps with confidence.

I'm 6'1" 205 lbs and I ride a 144.  I would think someone at 5'6" 175 lbs would be in the 134-137 category.  Maybe I am missing something or reading this post incorrectly?  150 is a huge board, for someone 225-250 lbs. not that it won't work for someone smaller but it's going to be challenging for someone his size to manuever.

@tex599, As a bigger rider myself, I agree with this^^^^.  Especially for a beginner.  I understand a 12 year old is a growing boy and you want something that he can "grow into" but a 150 is going to be yuge.

I’m 5’11 and 185.  I ride a 142 and the board is a little oversized for me (I intentially purchased that way).  I’d say a 140 would be perfect.

I’d shoot for a continuous rocker board, as they are the most forgiving and predictable.  Brand does not matter for a beginner.  I’d look for a 2015, 2016, or 2017 left over on Amazon.  Yhe binding are a little more important then the board at this point.  Get something a little nicer (close toe is good) so he is comfortable on the board. If the binding hurt, it will limit his time strapped in, and he will be less likely to want to keep riding.

Liquid Force Trip,, 142cm, whatever you get, get something with a center fin, a center tracks really well for noob, as he progresses and wants a slippery board for pressure spins, he can remove center fin.

I was completely off on the size, it is a 139 Ronix Vault and does have the center fins.
