12 v outlet addition suggestion

hi all

i want to add a 12v power outlet to my sunsetter. to make it easier to blow up tubes and rafts. kind of a pain to use the one in the glove box all the time.

question 1: which outlet to buy? i’m thinking like this one (thought nice to have USB also??)

question 2: where is good install location. i’m thinking towards back of boat.

any suggestions?

I'm not sure if the one you have listed has the press fit back end but you want to avoid that.  It might fall apart if someone jams an adapter in there.  This one is strong https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LZWAZFC/

As far as where to put it, the fiberglass flange in the back under the fold up locker cover is a good pace, with access to power too (with a fuse of course - off the starter and block ground).

On a previous boat I added this kind of connector, on the boat and inflator.  When inflating tubes, the cheesy cigarette lighter plug would always get very hot.  These handle the current better.

I dont know that I'd bother with the USB version if you're gonna put it in a locker. Doubt you'll be charging phones in the locker.  A USB/outlet combo would work well in the glove box or another cubby in the cabin area.

yeah im wanting to put it in a cubby... not a locker. teens always have their phones and never enough places to charge.

I hate tubes, but unfortunately, my daughters love them.  I too am struggling with this issue and could use some advise on the correct plug to install.  I have a 12v airhead pump that connect directly to my battery via aligator clips.  It draws 28amps when running.

https://airheadsup.cloudhostedresources.com/?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.airheadsup.com%2FAIRHEAD-High-Pressure-Air-Pump-12v-_p_32.html

my issues is, my batteries are in the bow of my boat, Which makes it very difficult to blow up the tube on the sun deck.  My dad said I could just cut off the alligator clips and replace with a cigarette adapter.  I could then use the cigarette plug near the cup holders in the main cabin.  This would solve my problem, but I’m concerned the pup may pull too many amps for the stock cigarette plug.

Do you guys think I will be ok?  Can it handle the amps?

Not going to work because the cig plugs already in the boat are not wired for that kind of load.

you certainly can put a plug/receptacle on the tube pump.  I'd just use something with beefy enough wiring to handle the load.  I've used AC Delco weatherpack connectors for exactly that purpose in the past.  So you'd wire the male end to the pump and have a female pigtail run somewhere that's convenient to plug in the pump.

If you want the plug at the back of the boat, wire it from the starter and block.  You can pull power from the starter (or if your boat has a power terminal under the back seat you can use that) and then ground to the block/tranny.  Fuse it (of course).

@SCMike

To avoid over heating an ACC plug or socket, I would get a weather-seal style male and female plug body with terminals and build your or disconnect. Cut off the alligators and place one side of the new connector and terminals there. For the boat, create pigtail thats wired direct to the battery/switch (with a fuse holder on the B+ at the battery) with the mating half of the new connector on the other end and route it to where it would be convenient to connect the pump to. There are connectors out there that the female side can be panel mounted just like a cig socket.

I've used trolling motor connectors for this in the past:

Thanks everyone, you confirmed my thinking that the stock cigarette won’t handle the load.  Looks like I’ll have to run a separate plug.  I’ll now have to figure out where to run the plug.  @shawndoggy, I might take your idea and run power from the starter.

my T22 has a power post under the back seat near the tranny.  you might too.  Looks like this:

Specs for the pump linked state 28A. Hard to argue with that without first hand experience with the pump. Sounds a bit much for a pump that moves air, but dunno. Best to design the circuit for more draw, then less.
