Thru hull / elbow / ball valve - adhesive question

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of installing a reversible for an on-bow bag.  I'm using adhesive recommended by my vendor (3m 4000) for the thru hull fitting on the flange and a bit at the nut.  Does everyone use some at the remaining threaded connections for the elbow, ball valve and threaded barb?  I'm in the process of wiring and plumbing so opinions are helpful.  I tried to run this by my vendor but was unable to get ahold of them.

Thanks!

Don't use adhesive anywhere except where you're going thru the hull. Use pipe thread compound on the connections that are not going thru the fiberglass.

The above advice is sound. Technically you don't need anything not the threaded connections, since they are NPT, and the pressures we deal with in this application are incredibly low (less than 3PSI), but if you get some piece of mind from putting either a fluid applied compound or simple teflon tape on the threads certainly won't hurt anything.

Any good Plumber will tell you that any thread compound, Teflon tape, pipe dope, or anything else is so that the "joint" will come apart if needed later and not used as a sealant. The taper on the threads will seal when tight.  (It was a question on the test)

You can use a non-permanent marine sealant on any and all of your threaded and hose barb fittings. It acts a thread lube to insure you get a fully seated NPT connection. It also works to break the friction of heated hose when trying to slip it over a plastic barb.
