Infamous HDS leak

Recommended Posts

Dude, that is the repair method.

Grind it out and fill will plexus.

I was going to use either 3M 5200 fast cure or just go for Marine-Tex which I also have. Any preferences? Is the 3M as good as Plexus? I was leaning towards the Marine-Tex and just be done with it.

5200 isn't meant for this kind of repair, and I've seen several botched attempts at HDS repairs with 5200, they never seem to work.

Thanks,

Marine-Tex it is.

No, Chris wasn't advising Marine-Tex, he was stating what should be used - Plexus.

Peter

Where would one find Plexus? And why wouldn't you recommend Marine-Tex

After careful consideration and a 1/2 using a dremel to grind out the plexus that was in there, and finding out more about the application of Plexus, I have decided to fall on my DIY sword and have a professional take care of it, The season is too short to botch the job.

I was talking about this one.

Proven huh, so the grind a fill is not a proven method? Considering the Malibu warranty fix is to grind it out and fill with plexus, I'm going to say it's a proven repair method.

Forgive for not excepting you as the method authority. I just used a different method on my boat that worked. This is nothing to get all worked up about.

How about the shaft log piece that you fiberglass to the bottom? (Nice work Hedgehogbob. But I don't have that creative talent!!) Does anyone Have a part # for it? I was told it comes in Aluminum and Brass.

I called Farmers Fiberglass and he said he ordered it from the malibu dealer. So I called the Malibu dealer and they had No Idea what I was talking about????

Looking at this thread, the repair shown using the hedge's tunnel method seems to trap water in the column. Any adverse problems when freezing weather hit during winter?

So, I have leak in a 2012 TXI that I am buggered if I can find. We started the mandatory MC searches and found this thread. Sorta sounds plausible as my TXI fills up with water overnight (so not water pump pressure or such like). I've search everything (rudder, stuffing box, exhausts, swim platform bolts, wedge etc etc) and I'm buggered if I can find the problem - can't find anything in all the usual places so the "Infamous HDS Leak" seems like a possible cause. That said, in my case the water can end up right up forward in the section under the bow seats. What I don't understand is how, if its a HDS leak, how the water ends up the front? Is there a path to the bow from a HDS leak thats not via the center of the boat, as the bung is in... ie it would have to be coming forward under the floor one either side of the boat? I'm no expert in the layup, but it does not seem possible on initial inspection....?

Thoughts appreciated

Andrew

Sounds like it stays on the water...you said you check everything but did you check tracking fins?  May not be applicable for that year, but I know some models are bolt-through and others a just glued in.

Hi Formulaben,

It stays in the water overnight when we are there not permanently. Yes, checked the fins, even put water in the boat on the trailer to see what came out -  nothing.

I just installed a 15-16 deg shaft log from Marine Hardware Inc.

Part #: SHLG16150-B

Fit great on my 2001 Malibu Response, water problem fixed!

^ So you just bought the angled shaft log and installed it and didn't fool with all that fiberglass/epoxy work?  I have a 2001 Malibu Response LX that has this water problem I am needing to fix.

I suspect that you would have to cut out the front of the HDS box, then fit the new log and drill the hull for the new mounting screws.  You may need to level the surface of the hull to get a good mate with the new log so you can seal it well.

Personally, I'm not so sure that this is easier than reglassing the inside edge of the box.

Well, I’ve started the process.  I made the “log” out of fiberglass/resin tonight.  I guess I will proceed with the glassing of the box and securing the log.  A little nervous about doing this, since it seems very permanent, should it not work.

it appears in the pictures that u only glass/epoxy the very base of the HDS box and up onto the walls.  I assume that u have to be sure to not cover the bolts for the strut and what not?
