Hi everyone,
Does anyone have a pictoral discussion or posting of how to replace and adjust the driveshaft packing?
New to the inboard market and this is another one of those "mysteries" to me.

Does the packing need to be replaced or can you tighten it up some? You should see two nuts that go around the shaft at the end of the stuffing box. The outer nut is a jam nut. Loosen this nut a little and then try tightening the inner nut about an eighth of a turn. Retighten the jam nut and try running the boat. The packing should leak at about 1 drip every 8-10 seconds. If it is still dripping harder than that, try another eighth of a turn. After you make your adjustment and have run the boat, make sure the stuffing box does not get hot. It should be cool to the touch. If it is hot, you have overtightened the packing and you need to loosen it. If you are unable to adjust the nut to get the proper drip rate, you must replace the packing.

If you do replace it go with the Gore packing rather than the usual wax packing.

Thanks for the responses, I did not find a discussion as to hoow to replace tho, they talked about dental picks and getting out the packing (and Yes, I did see the goretex packing material on DIM site, thanks) is there a manual or something that shows how to do this procedure?

From the GFO site:

Installation Instructions
Open the stuffing box.
Remove the old packing completely.
Check the new packing and make sure it's the proper size.
Check the condition of the shaft. Any burrs or sharp areas must be repaired prior to installation.
Wrap GFO fiber packing around the shaft, wherever it's easily accessible, and cut each ring. Or use a mandrel the same size as your shaft to cut rings.
Install GFO fiber packing in the stuffing box one ring at a time making sure that you stagger the joints approximately 90o. It is essential that the ends of the rings meet cleanly at the joint. (Do not add grease or other lubricants - these can hinder performance.)
Tighten the packing gland until it is snug. Do not overtighten.
After about one or two hours of running time,, check the stuffing box for leakage, and make a final adjustment to attain minimum leakage. (There should be virtually no leakage.)
