No replacement exhaust flaps / covers for inside stainless exhaust tips?

I am unable to locate replacement inside-the-pipe exhaust flaps / covers for my 2004 Malibu Response Lxi w/Monsoon 340 w/stainless straight exhaust tips. The flaps appear to be circular but are fastened inside the pipes with a straight metal pin. The flaps are sorta hinged on this pin to allow exhaust out but prevent water from coming in while engine is not running. The current pair on there are basically half worn off and need to be replaced--a ski bud noticed it while wiping down the boat last weekend.

I have searched many websites with boat supplies and all I can find are the kind that attach to the end of the exhaust pipes. AFAIK these will not work for my setup unless I hacksaw off the stainless pipes LOL.

Nice how an aesthetic and extra feature / option for the boat (that I did not order) now turn out to be a real pain

I've contacted my Malibu Dealer and so far they are finding that I might have to replace the whole exhaust pipe tip with the flap at $179 per tip. That is ridiculous. If I have to do that, I will eliminate the fancy stainless tips if possible. Hopefully they contact Malibu directly and are given a better answer.

Does anyone have any clues about this?

Quick question for the Crew. Just bought an 05 vlx last sept, used it a handful of times. I changed the oil on my own last fall, my dealer told me to use "Quicksilver 25W-40". I checked the manual as well as a couple of forums and everyone INCLUDING my Indmar manual recomends 15W-40. I live in Wisconsin, could that be the reason for the 25W-40 recomendation from my dealer? I'm currious, what engine oil does everyone seem to prefer and how often should I change my oil if I run her hard.....fully sacked up 90% of the time I'm on the water?

ECU fault & won't start

I have a 2005 21 LSV with the Monsoon engine. 2 years ago it suffered freeze damage and the engine was replaced this spring. My dad and brother put about 4 hours on it and I put another 2 or so.

The second time I took it out, I turned the key on at the house to check fuel, the gauges didn't spin up and the LCD display read "NRES". I shut it off and back on again and the gauges came on and fuel was 7/8. I went to check the hours and expected around 155 but it read 0.0. I took it to the lake and ran the blowers about 5 minutes waiting to launch. We backed it into the water and it started just like normal, I shut off the blowers and the engine died. I just thought it was cold, but it wouldn't restart. It cranked over strong but it wouldn't fire. Then the LCD display started showing "ECU". We spent about an hour searching for any loose connections or anything but no luck.

Here's what I've tried.
1) Paperclip method to reset ECU with throttle cycle
2) Disconnecting batteries for about an hour
3) Checked EFI fuses: good
4) Disconnected and reconnected every connector I could reach
5) Turned the key on and checked fuel at the valve on the fuel rail: it only dribbled out
6) Fuel filter is clear
7) Checked the fuel pump with multi-meter: no power
8) Checked the connection about 6" up from the fuel pump: no power
9) Checked spark at distributor coil wire: good spark
10) It still turns over strong, but won't fire

The Malibu dealer is about an hour and a half to two hours away (through Denver traffic), closes at 6 and won't accept boats for service on weekends. I'm thinking about taking it to the Supra dealer which is closer and the service department seems more helpful and willing to work on the Indmar engine. Thanks for any help.

NO START - TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE

As often as we have entertained the 'no start' condition I think we, as a community, should build a comprehensive troubleshooting procedure.
Until ice out I have a bit of free time so I built the following strawman as a starting point.
I am hoping to get lots of feedback from all the kids at tmc.

I will attempt to edit the pdf document as any new entries (be brutal, I can take it) indicate that changes are required. That way users do NOT need to browse the complete thread to sort out the individual details. If this topic matures gracefully we may want to build a flow-chart to better illustrate the decision tree and/or migrate to the diy section (or anywhere the mods prefer).

Let's give it a whirl and see where it goes from here.

I've given up trying to make the document look rational in the bbs editor. Instead I've included this link to a PDF that should be globally available. PDF extensions may need to be renamed after saving a local copy. If you don't care to check out the pdf here is
THE SHORT LIST:

Key to ON position.

Normal: Gages active and continuous (repeating) MDC Warning Chime.

Check: Battery isolation switch, Safety lanyard, Battery voltage.

Key to Crank.

Normal: Engine spins

No Spin Check: Gear shift in neutral, Main circuit breaker, Engine circuit breaker, Battery voltage, Hydro-locked

Normal: Engine Starts

No Start Check: Fuel in tank, Vapor Lock, Fuel pump cycle (at ignition on), Flooded engine, Fuel filter, Fuel pump intake screen, ECM/EFI relay working, Cannon connector, Intake and Exhaust passages clear

I'm not married to any of this.
Please feel free to comment so that we can have a decent resource/document.
Thanks for the help.

Oil Removal

1987 Malibu Skier. 350 w/dip stick tube on drivers / starboard side. Dip stick handle is near the front of the motor / by valve cover. Dip stick tube makes two 90 degree turns and enters the block about mid starter. . . I see no drain tube for the oil (My 1974 Nautique w/351W has a tube from the pan that can easily be uncapped and have the oil drain through the bilge hole in to a catch pan. . . very easly / slick. Looks like the Malibu needs to have a tube sent down the dip stick tube, snaked around the two 90 degree turns, approximately 30" in total length to hit the bottom of the pan. Seems like a pain. Is this how most of you change your oil in your Chev equipped Malibu's?

Since I am removing the motor for repair . . is there a slick fix to making the oil draining easier (and more complete)?

Thanks all.

Ski pylon stuck, need suggestions to free it up

The ski pylon on our 07 Sunscape is stuck in the down position. It seems to be galled in the nylon ring. I have tried everything to free the POS up, but it does not want to move. It seems the tolerances in the nylon bushing ring are way too tight.
Anybody have any suggestions on getting this freed up?
Any one else have this problem?

Leaking heater due to missing hoses

Picked up a 2005 Vride with dual heater. Was measuring for a sub box when i noticed both water hoses at the heater had been cut off. Its been wet under the drivers feet but thought it was from our cracked fittings we had on the ballast tanks. Do i have to run all new lines now? Dont know how far they were cut back but the person could have at least bypassed the system.

Engine ECU no Data

Out last night on my 2007 VTX and then the message popped up in the display intermitantly. It would come up and indicate the number of seconds without engine data. Engine is the monsoon in case that matters. When this happens, I lose the speedo, the cruise, the Tach, as well as the feed to the OIL, Temp, and Volt guage. I can hit "E" and it clears the error, but obviously not the problem. Thoughts? PO was out and it sounds like there is a $250 module that needs to be replaced...just wasn't clear on what that was exactly. Boat ran normal FWIW. We still boarded, but it's hard to drive by ear and stay consistent.

Steering Tilt mechanism replacement

I have an '05 VLX with a loose steering wheel, which turns out to be a problem with the tilt mechanism. This seems like a straightforward project but I am struggling to remove the part the steering wheel bolts to to replace the entire tilt mechanism. I removed the main bolt and assumned this piece would just slide right off of the shaft, but i have pulled and pulled and can not get it to even budge a little. Am I missing something that is holding this in place? There doesnt appear to be anything and the dealer insists there is nothing. I'll spray some WD 40 on tonight to see if that helps loosen things up, but wanted to see if anyone had any tricks up their sleeve? Thanks!
